What Causes Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes occur when the amount or quality of tears produced by the eye is insufficient to keep the eyes lubricated and comfortable. Common causes of dry eyes include aging, environmental factors such as windy or dry climates, and certain medications. Additionally, people who suffer from skin conditions such as rosacea are more prone to developing chronic dry eyes due to irritated and inflamed eyelids.

A healthy tear contains a balance of naturally produced water, oil, and mucus, which allows the tear to properly hydrate the eye. If not enough of the oil layer is produced by the Meibomian gland, patients may begin to experience dry eye syndrome. Our dry eye treatment aims to revitalize the Meibomian gland’s function and restore healthy lubrication and hydration to the patient’s eyes.

What Are the Benefits of Envision Dry Eye Care?

Envision dry eye care is a comprehensive approach to treating chronic dry eye that involves either a Forma-I or Lumecca-I treatment. This allows for maximum relief with minimal downtime, as patients can achieve significant improvement in tear production and ocular comfort after completing a series of quick and comfortable treatment sessions. Additionally, each procedure provides an added benefit of improving signs of aging in the eyelids, such as reducing wrinkles or skin laxity.

How Does It Work?

Lumecca-I IPL Treatment:
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, a type of therapy with a wide range of clinical and cosmetic uses. For dry eyes, it focuses on treating the Meibomian glands by heating them and turning any solidified oils or blockages in them back into liquids. At the same time, the treatment helps eliminate any bacteria that could be causing inflammation of the eyelids and its glands.
Forma-I RF Treatment:
RF energy allows even, uniform heating of the eyelids, which melts oil blockage in the glands. At the same time, the device allows for consistent gentle pressure to promote flow in the glands, expressing the oils and returning healthy tear formation to the eyes.

Benefits of Non-Surgical Dry Eye Treatment

  • No Surgery: Envision dry eye care is a non-surgical treatment that does not require any type of cutting or stitching.
  • No Anesthesia: Since this is a non-invasive procedure, there is no need for anesthesia or sedation and the risks carried with them.
  • Safe and Effective: Both the Forma-I and Lumecca-I treatments have been shown to be safe and effective in treating dry eye symptoms.
  • Quick Recovery: Patients can usually expect to see results within a few days of treatment, with no significant downtime or discomfort associated with the procedure.
  • Long-Lasting Results: After undergoing Envision dry eye care, patients often experience long-lasting relief from their dry eye symptoms.

What Is a Treatment Session Like?

Despite the name, an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment for Forma-I itself does not feel intense, with most patients experiencing only a mild sensation of tingling or brief snapping. For patients with more sensitive skin, we may provide a local numbing cream to ensure comfort. The treatment session itself may last only a few minutes, with most sessions lasting only about half an hour. The Lumecca-I RF treatment session is similar in length and how it feels. After a treatment session, patients can expect to return to their daily activities right away, though some prefer to take the day off to allow any redness or swelling to go away before returning to work or routines.

Which Is the Right Treatment for Me: Forma-I or Lumecca-I?

The right treatment for each patient will depend on the severity of their dry eye symptoms and underlying condition. Forma-I is an RF treatment that helps to reduce inflammation and stimulate tear production, while Lumecca-I is an IPL treatment that targets the surface layer of skin in order to open up blocked Meibomian glands and restore healthy tear flow. Dr. Kauh will work with each patient to determine which treatment option is best for them and provide a tailored approach to their dry eye care.

After Your Treatment: Recovery & Results

Once the treatment has been completed, patients can resume normal activities with no further restrictions, meaning there is no real amount of downtime required. While patients may experience some redness and minor swelling in the treated area, these minor side effects should subside within a few hours of treatment. In most cases, patients will begin to notice improvement in their dry eye symptoms with a single treatment, but to fully address concerns, patients typically need about three treatment sessions, with one session per month.
After completing your full treatment plan, you can expect long-lasting improvements to dry eye symptoms and dysfunction of the Meibomian gland. However, some patients may require maintenance sessions about once a year to ensure continued results, depending on the severity and cause of their individual dry eye condition.
