What Is Entropion?

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid turns inward, often causing the eyelashes to rub against the surface of the eye. While it might start out seemingly harmless, it can eventually lead to irritation on the eye or more serious damage. The good news is that an eyelid surgeon can usually treat the problem with a single surgical procedure.

This condition can happen due to age, injury, or other medical conditions that cause changes in the shape of the eyelid. Entropion often results in irritation, redness, and watering of the eye. In severe cases, it can lead to corneal scratches or ulcers.

Should I Have Entropion Repair Treatment?

If entropion is causing you any amount of discomfort, it is probably time to seek out treatment. In some cases, entropion will improve on its own without intervention. However, if it does not or if it causes significant irritation, entropion repair is the best way to find relief.

Left untreated, entropion can lead to increasingly severe symptoms and even result in damage to the eye. So even if it is a small concern now, we recommend visiting for a consultation to get an expert opinion.

What Is Entropion Repair Like?

The entropion repair procedure is usually quick and straightforward, typically needing only one procedure for full results. It can be done in-office under local anesthesia and usually only takes under an hour to fully complete the procedure. Once the anesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will make one or more small incisions in the eyelid according to the cause of the concern. From there, they will tighten or reposition the muscles in order to return the eyelid to a more natural and comfortable position. After your procedure, you can return home the same day and start the recovery process.

Entropion Repair Recovery and Results

After entropion repair, it is normal to experience some bruising and swelling around the eyelid. These should start to improve within a few days with your initial results appearing after one to two weeks. With your eyelid back in its ideal position, any irritation or symptoms from before your procedure should also gradually fade. During this time, you will need to take care not to rub or put pressure on the eye in order to avoid irritating the incisions or eye further.
